Resizing images in WordPress
If you need to resize an image but haven’t done it before you uploaded to WordPress, you can edit them directly in the media library.
Open up Media in the WordPress dashboard left-hand menu.
1. How to get the edit function.
Find the photo you wish to edit. and click on it within your library.
A screen with all the key details of the photo will load.
Click on Edit Image underneath the picture. This will open up the editor.
2. Cropping an image.
To crop an image, over your image drag a box – sometimes you have to start from the middle, for the box to appear.
You can adjust it as much as you need once the initial box has been created.
Once you’re happy, click the crop symbol above the image on the left-hand side.
If you want to crop an image to a square, before you create your selection box, head the right-hand side with Image Crop.
Type in 1 to each box under aspect ratio. Then the box you drag to create should be square.
You can do this with any aspect ration you want.
3. Scaling an image
You can scale an image, so it retains it’s shape, but just becomes smaller. Use the scale image on the right-hand side.
Type in your new dimensions and click scale.
If you are cropping and scaling, also crop your image first.
4. Rotating an image.
To rotate an image click the two rotate symbols above the picture:
This will change its orientation for you.
5. Flipping your image
If you want to mirror your picture back to front or upside down, use the flip buttons above the picture.
The first one mirrors the bottom edge.
The second one mirrors the right-hand edge.
6. Undo and Redo
If you make a mistake there is undo and redo buttons that appear above the picture.
7. Saving
Before you save, you have the option to apply the edits to different things. These options are found under Thumbnail Settings.
If you want a square thumbnail, but the rest of the pictures the same, you would crop and scale and select Thumbnail under the thumbnail settings.
To get thumbnail to stay the same, but all the other photos to be editing, you would select “All sizes except thumbnail”.
For the changes to apply to everything click “All Image Sizes”
Click Save under the photo.
8. Next photo
It’s easy to move to the next photo using the arrows at the top right-hand side of the editing box.
