In WooCommerce, product categories are great for managing your different types of products and search filters.

They are usually the type of product rather than features of the products, which are defined with product attributes.

 

For example, if you were selling a Blue T-Shirt, the Product Category would be “T-Shirts” and the Product Attribute would be “Blue”.

 

1. Finding Product Categories

Categories are found in Product > Categories. When you click on this it will show you all your current categories.

 

2. Adding a new Product Category

To add a new product category, type in the name of the new category. It will automatically create a slug for you.

You don’t have to input a description or thumbnail, but this will help with your SEO.

Product Categories can have multiple levels. For example, a parent category could be “Clothing” and the sub-category “T-Shirts”

Use the Parent Category drop-down to add subcategories.

The display type is used for the category landing page.

When people land on the page, you can either show a page of the products, subcategories if it’s a parent category or you can show both.

The default is usually just products, but see what you find most useful.

 

3. Editing a Product Category

To edit a Product Category, hover over the Product Category you want to edit and click “Edit”.

This will open the category page, where you can change all the category options.

Make sure you click “Update”

 

4. Removing a Product Category

To remove a Product Category hover over the Product Category you want to remove and click “Delete”.

Remember that once you remove it, all the data is removed.
